Off late the fraudsters have been trying to trick the users to believe that they are logged in from two different cities and they need to verify the genuine user. An OTP is sent to verify the user, but the money is deducted from their bank account.
The caller generally speaks to the users in a very sophisticated tone stating that "We can see your account is being logged in from two different cites and we would like to remove the duplicate logged in user as it could be a hacker!!
The user generally agrees to the suggestion and is ready to cooperate with the caller. On receipt of the OTP, the user immediately shares the same to the caller.
Within couple of minutes when the user notices that there is a loss of money from the account and then the panic starts.
Even after the complaint is lodged with the city Cyber Crime Cell of the police or the national portal www.cybercrime.gov.in, the investigation is a bit complicated as the callers generally use the virtual numbers of different countries and are on the whatsApp calls.
Our Recommendation:
Never share your otp and tell the caller that they why the other device is not showing up in the system of their application? And one can also ask the official email of the caller to make the report.
