When Computers were introduced in corporate or institutions, no one did realize the likely dangers of loosing their data if not secured appropriately!! In the growing technology of today, the accompanied dangers of Fast Tags need to be catered as well. Its definitely a great method to collect the toll tax at the toll plaza, but Director, Cyber Crime Helpline LLP, Commander Sunil Srivastava (retd) warns of the lurching dangers of the exposed Fast Tags.
How the FatTag works?
With the use of Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) technology, the FASTag scanner scans the tag affixed on the vehicle and automatically deducts the toll amount from the linked prepaid account.
But the method has one flaw which can be exploited by the hackers or fraudster. With the exploitation of the Software Defined Radio (SDR), the hackers or fraudsters can capture the RFID!! And the same signal signature can be emitted while crossing the toll gates by them. This will not only be amounted to cheating or stealing, but difficult to track the person who could be a terrorist or fraudster or a gangster crossing the toll gate.
Our Recommendation:
It is important to display the Fast Tag at the toll gates while you are crossing in your vehicle, but in other times the Fast Tag can be concealed.
One can also resort to keeping the FAST TAG on the vehicle dashboard at the time of crossing the toll gates and later can be kept away from the prying eyes of the hackers or fraudster.
